Aberdare National Park safari guide

Aberdare National Park offers a very different side of a Kenya safari. Instead of wide open plains, the landscape rises into cool mountain forest, bamboo belts, steep ravines, high moorland and rushing streams. Mist and changing light give the park a quiet, atmospheric character that works especially well for travellers who enjoy scenery, birding, photography and a slower style of wildlife viewing.

Elephants and buffalo move through the forest, while bushbuck, waterbuck, black and white colobus monkeys and other forest species are regularly associated with the park. Leopard occur but are naturally difficult to see in the thick vegetation, and the rare mountain bongo is one of the most sought after mammals in the wider Aberdare ecosystem. Wildlife can also gather around waterholes and salt licks, making patient observation particularly rewarding.

Beyond wildlife, the Aberdares are ideal for travellers interested in waterfalls, mountain viewpoints and guided hiking. The higher sections open into Afro alpine moorland, creating a dramatic contrast with the dense lower forests. Planning your visit

The drier periods from June to September and again from December to February generally provide easier road conditions and better access to viewpoints and forest tracks. Temperatures can be surprisingly cold at altitude, particularly early in the morning and at night, so warm clothing is useful even on a Kenya safari.
