Meru National Park is one of Kenya's most rewarding choices for travellers who want excellent wildlife without the traffic of the country's busiest parks. The landscape is varied and photogenic, with red earth, grassland, doum palms, baobabs and lush river corridors flowing across the park toward the Tana River system.

All of the Big Five occur in Meru, and the park's rhino sanctuary provides an important focus for conservation and wildlife viewing. Elephant and buffalo can be numerous, while big cats are present but can require patience. Meru is also an excellent place to look for northern Kenya species including reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx and gerenuk, adding variety to a standard southern Kenya safari checklist.

The park is closely connected with the story of George and Joy Adamson and Elsa the lioness, and visitors can explore places associated with this conservation history. Riverine habitat, viewing points and varied birdlife make Meru especially attractive to repeat safari travellers. It can also be paired with neighbouring Kora National Park for a much more adventurous eastern Kenya route.

Planning your visit

The dry months from June to October usually give the most dependable road conditions and concentrated wildlife viewing. Meru remains less crowded than many better known parks, making it a strong choice for private safaris and photography.
