Saiwa Swamp National Park is a small, intimate conservation area where the safari experience takes place on foot rather than from a vehicle. Wetland, riverine forest, reeds and acacia woodland create a compact habitat that rewards patient observation and makes the park especially attractive to birders and specialist wildlife travellers.

The signature species is the semi aquatic sitatunga antelope, which is adapted to moving through swamp vegetation. Saiwa is also one of the best places in the region to look for De Brazza's monkey. Bushbuck, otters, colobus monkeys and other smaller mammals occur in and around the wetland, while the park's rich birdlife includes many forest and swamp species.

Marked trails, boardwalks and raised viewing platforms allow visitors to explore quietly and watch the swamp from different angles. Because there are no conventional big game drives, Saiwa feels more like a nature walk and birding sanctuary than a classic safari park. It can be particularly rewarding for photographers interested in smaller species, plants, birds and wetland landscapes.

Planning your visit

December to March generally offers drier walking conditions, but the park remains a specialist nature destination throughout the year. Waterproof footwear can be useful after rain.
