Tsavo East National Park delivers scale, space and a strong sense of wilderness. The park is known for broad semi arid plains, red earth and long horizons, making it visually very different from the greener highland and Rift Valley parks. Large elephant herds often take on the colour of the red soil, creating one of the most recognizable images of a Tsavo safari.

Tsavo East supports a wide range of wildlife including elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and many plains species. Black rhinos occur in the wider ecosystem but are not commonly seen on normal game drives. Cheetah, gerenuk and other dry country species add interest, while birding is excellent across river, bush and open country habitats.

The Galana River is one of the park's great landscape features, with crocodiles, riverine vegetation and striking rock formations. Lugard Falls, Mudanda Rock, Aruba Dam and the immense Yatta Plateau add scenic variety to a game drive. Travellers arriving from Kenya's coast can access Tsavo East conveniently, making it a popular bridge between beach holidays and inland safari routes. It also combines naturally with Tsavo West National Park and Amboseli National Park.

Planning your visit

June to October and January to February are generally the easiest periods for wildlife viewing and road travel. Temperatures can be high, so early morning and late afternoon drives are particularly valuable.
