Tsavo West National Park is one of Kenya's most scenic large wilderness areas. Volcanic hills, black lava, wooded valleys, open savannah and isolated water sources create a constantly changing landscape. Wildlife can be less concentrated than in smaller parks, but the variety of habitats and the scale of the wilderness make every game drive feel exploratory.

All of the Big Five occur in Tsavo West. Elephant, buffalo and lion can be encountered across the main game viewing areas, while leopard remain more elusive. The Tsavo West Rhino Sanctuary adds an important conservation dimension and offers a chance to search for black rhino. Dry country species including lesser kudu and fringe eared oryx add further variety.

Mzima Springs is one of the park's defining attractions, where clear spring water supports lush vegetation and resident hippos. Shetani Lava Flow, Chaimu Crater, the Ngulia Hills and panoramic viewpoints reveal the park's volcanic history, while Lake Jipe adds a contrasting wetland landscape near the Tanzania border. Tsavo West combines exceptionally well with Amboseli National Park, Chyulu Hills National Park and Tsavo East National Park.

Planning your visit

June to October and January to February usually provide the best balance of dry roads and wildlife visibility. Dense vegetation can make animal sightings less predictable, so allowing enough time improves the experience.
