African Lion

African lions live in social groups called prides, although pride size and composition vary. On safari they may be seen resting for long periods during the heat of the day, becoming more active when temperatures fall.

Look for social behavior as much as hunting behavior: grooming, cub play, scent marking and contact calls can be just as memorable as a chase.

• Roaring helps individuals communicate and advertise territory over long distances.
• Good guides read tracks, alarm calls and recent movement rather than promising a sighting.
